The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based approach to religious education that helps children ages 3 to 12 develop a deep, personal relationship with God. Through Scripture, prayer, and hands-on experiences, children are invited to discover God’s love and grow in faith at their own pace.

Developed in Rome in 1954 by Hebrew Scripture scholar, Sofia Cavalletti and Montessori educator, Gianna Gobbi, CGS is rooted in the belief that even young children have a natural desire and capacity to know and experience God.

The Atrium

  • A Sacred Space: A peaceful, specially prepared space designed for prayer, reflection, and wonder.

  • Hands-On Materials: Beautiful, handmade materials help children explore Scripture, the liturgy, and the sacraments.

  • Time to Discover: After a brief presentation, children have time to work, pray, reflect, and explore at their own pace.

Age Levels

CGS is organized into three developmental levels:

  • Level I (Ages 3–6): Jesus the Good Shepherd, Scripture, and the Mass.

  • Level II (Ages 6–9): The Kingdom of God, moral life, and Jesus.

  • Level III (Ages 9–12): God’s plan of salvation, human history, and our place in creation.

At the Parish of St. Timothy we currently offer levels 1 and 2.
